He didn't, and whoever wrote the gospels didn't either. It does however make a better story (audience appeal) and was made up and added to whatever factual material was used. This is a common device used in stories such as sermons where the subject is in peril (John was trapped in the caved in mine. Before he died he thought ...) to increase the listeners empathy.

ANSWER: How do we know the many things written in this great Book, The Bible. We know these things by the Holy Spirit of God who wrote the Bible. He inserted many things that would otherwise be unknown.
