Weather was a problem for all traders back in that time, not just Muslims. One of the reasons the Arab traders used camels, for example, was they performed well under extreme conditions: they could carry heavy items across a hot desert and not need to stop for water for extended periods of time.
Most traders were experienced travelers; they knew how to guess changes in the weather from cloud patterns, or prepare for a period of drought by carrying extra supplies; but unexpected conditions such as sandstorms caused all traders problems, delaying them and in some cases, even contributing to their death.
