Native Americans met their basic needs in a few ways. They hunted and grew plants for food and gathered water to drink.
The Native Americans of the plains depended on Buffalo for a main food source shortly after the Spaniards introduced the Horse to the Native Americans. They realized hunting was easier and didn't take nearly as much time as farming and gathering. Which is what they did before. They also usually suffered from Vitamins deficiency, because they usually just ate meat instead of the other foods they ate before. They might of gotten sick easily.
The Natives also used very part of the Buffalo. Nothing went to waste. They used the coat as clothing or blankets. Or used the leather made from the buffalo hide for other things. The bones were used in Jewelry, tools and sometimes weapons.
The Shamans in those tribes would use some of the parts of the Buffalo for ceremonies. The could make contact with the spirit of the Buffalo and aid in future hunts.
The Buffalo was a huge contributor to the survival and also the culture of the Plain Indians. Sadly because of all the hunting, the Buffalo almost became extinct. So we're lucky we still have them today.
Certainly the deer but also bears, racoons, rabbits and among Inuits the moose and polar bear and seal.
