The word "Nazi" is a political term, meaning someone who belonged to the National Socialist German Workers' Party before or during World War II. The extent to which this influenced one's life would depend upon whether he was a member of Hitler's administration, or a Brownshirt, or an SS soldier. All of these were Nazis.

Nazi soldiers were people too, there were those who were more kind hearted and those that were more ruthless. So some would treat people badly and others would treat people well.

As with everyone the way that they treated people was affected by many external influences also.

Why was doing the Nazi salute racist?

The salute is not racist in itself. But since it is a representation of the Nazi regime, which stood for a racist ideology, doing it now invokes the feelings of anti-Semitism. Much like how the swastika is, in fact, an ancient Indian symbol representing life, its use now has been bastardized by Nazi Germany. The salute is not racist in itself.
