Both New York and New Jersey were colonized by the Dutch in the 1600s. New Jersey also had early Swedish and German colonies.

Later the powerful British colonial forces took over these areas and renamed them for cities in England, such as York and Jersey.

New York City was originally New Amsterdam, for example.

After the American Revolution, in the 1700s, the British colony of New Jersey became one of the first thirteen "States" of the new United States. However, these freed colonies were not really "states", which would mean separate "countries", but joined together formed the "United States", which would then act as a nation state independent from Europe.
