∙ 10y agoNew South Wales was named by Lieutenant James Cook on his famous voyage in the Endeavour in 1770. When he saw the east coast of what is now called Australia, he named it after Wales, now part of the UK. New because it was, for him at least, and South because of its location. Hence, New South Wales.

The New South Wales town of Parkes is named after statesman Sir Henry Parkes. In Canberra, the suburb of Parkes and the road Parkes Way are both named after him also.
