Believing him to be dead, Penelope sets up a contest where she decides the person who can string Odysseus' bow and shoot an arrow through twelve axe shafts can have her hand. Odysseus is the only one who can string the bow and do this. When he reveals his identity to her, she believes it's one of the gods playing a trick, and asks him to move the bed. Odysseus knows this cannot be done, since he built the bed and knows one of the posts is a living olive tree.

Odysseus proved the loyalty of his wife Penelope by being the only one able to string and shoot an arrow through a line of twelve axe heads, a task he accomplished upon his return to Ithaca. This feat symbolized his unique bond with Penelope, as she had never given up hope of his return and had remained faithful to him throughout his long absence.
