A:There are three ways in which the New Testament gospels tell us that Pilate tried to get out of dealing with Jesus:

The gospels tell us that there was a Jewish custom to release a condemned man for the Passover. Believing that the Jews would rather have Jesus released than Barabbas, a robber, Pontius Pilate asked whom he should release, but the mob told him to release Barabbas. Scholars of first-century Jewish customs can find no evidence that a condemned man was ever released for the Passover, but the story does parallel a known Jewish custom of releasing a lamb for the Passover and of sacrificing a second lamb. If this story was intended as an allegory, the Jews simply had the wrong 'lamb' released.

Luke's Gospel introduces a second way, in which Pilate sought to have Jesus tried by Herod Antipas, ruler of Galilee, who was conveniently in Jerusalem at the time.

John's Gospel has Pilate tell the Jews to try Jesus in their own court, but the Jews replied that they did not have the authority to condemn a man to death. Once again scholars have questioned whether this restriction on the Jewish courts really existed. A counter-argument is in Acts of the Apostles, which tells us the Sanhedrin condemned Stephen to be stoned to death.

It is hard to tell which of these ways in which Pilate tried to avoid dealing with Jesus is historically true.

Was Jesus crucified after a trial that Pilate never wanted?

Pilate found no fault in Jesus so he told the Jewish leaders to try Jesus themselves according to their own laws. Pilate learned that Jesus was a Galilean and was under Herod's jurisdiction so Pilate sent Jesus to Herod, who had heard about Jesus and wanted to see him. When Jesus came back, Pilate told the Jewish leaders that neither he nor Herod could find Jesus guilty of a crime that brought with it the death penalty. Pilate proposed to have Jesus scourged and then released. During passover the Romans had a custom of releasing one Jewish prisoner of the crowd's choosing. Pilate thought they might choose Jesus, but the crowd made clear they wanted him to release a prisoner named Barabbas. The crowd became a mob and with increased intensity called for Pilate to crucify Jesus. Pilate knew his first mandate from Caesar was to keep these people under control. Pilate therefore took a bowl of water and washed his hands, declaring his innocence of the blood of Jesus. I do not suppose Pilate never wanted the trial, only that he knew Jesus was innocent and did not want to see Him crucified.

Did Jews try Jesus and failed?

No, the Jews took Jesus before the governor Pontius Pilate because he was the only one who had the authority to have him executed. Though Pilate recognized Jesus as the King of the Jews he was afraid of a rebellion so he went ahead and had himcrucified.

What did Pontius Pilate and Herod Antipas have to do with the death of Jesus?

A:In the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and John, Pontius Pilate alone tried Jesus and sentenced him to death, although most unwillingly. In the Gospel of Luke, Pontius Pilate was asked by the religious authorities to try and sentence Jesus but, being unwilling to sentence an innocent man and learning that Herod Antipas was in Jerusalem, sent Jesus to Herod to be sentenced. Herod, in turn, was unwilling to sentence Jesus and so left Pilate with this terrible responsibility.
