He does not stand up for Ponyboy, if you read the end correctly you'd notice that it said he (Soda) didn't like picking sides. He did sometimes, but not always. Be more specific, just a suggestion...

∙ 12y agoThe point that I would gather you mean is the conversation held at the hospital when Soda tells Pony that Darry was very upset the entire time Pony was gone. Pony was surprised by this because Darry always seemed angry at Pony, never before had the idea that the anger was a mask for concern or love.
