Roosevelt used the war to get elected to a third term in 1940. We were not yet in it, but were sending arms to Britain and building up out defense industries. After the war began, he won a fourth term and led us to victory, so to speak. (He was not so successful dealing with the Soviets after the war wound down and ended.)
