Queen Victoria came to the throne because of a series of instances that made her the heir to the throne.

Queen Victoria was the granddaughter of King George III. He had 15 children, but most of the children born to his sons were illegitimate. The Prince of Wales George (Queen Victoria's Uncle) married his first cousin and had a daughter Charlotte. who was the sole legitimate grandchild of George III. She however died giving birth to a baby boy in 1817. Shortly after Charlotte's death several sons of George III got married in the hope that they would produce another heir.

After the deaths of George III and his son George IV the next two in line were William and Edward, sons of George III.

William and Edward got married in a double ceremony and their wives gave birth to children within a short period of time. William's child however did not survive and several months later Edward died, making Victoria next in line to the throne after William. When he died in 1836 she became Queen.

Queen Victoria became Queen because of her ancestry. She was the granddaughter of King George III. Her father was the Duke of Kent and one of the Kings eldest sons. Victoria's father died when she was an infant and after the death of her uncles who were her fathers elder brothers she became Queen since neither of them had surviving legitimate children.
