During World War I, the loss of morale and fighting effectiveness on the part of Imperial Russia in 1917-18 affected the remaining Allies in a negative way. Their strategic position suddenly became much worse, as Germany especially could now focus even more force upon the Western Front. It was mainly the timely entrance of the United States into the war that served to counter-balance this strategic negative.
