It depended which theatre they were in. The Globe, as well as the Curtain, the Theatre and the Rose and all the outdoor theatres depended on natural sunlight to illuminate the stage, so the crew did not have to do anything. When they were performing in the Blackfriars, however, they were indoors and the stage was lit by candles--lots of them. The plays, which had previously been performed without a break, now were divided into acts so the crew could get out there and trim, relight or replace the candles.
