For instance, Shelby Foote was an American Civil War historian and Shelby Metcalf was the head coach for the Texas A&M Aggies men's basketball team. Country singer Reba McEntire also has a son named Shelby. Shelby as a girl's name gained popularity after Julia Roberts played Shelby in the movie "Steel Magnolias." Before that movie, Shelby was a pretty rare name for either sex.

If you like to read, Shelby Foote has written several volumes on Civil War history.

Shelby Foote described General Ulysses S. Grant as "a dust-covered man on a dust-covered horse" in Ken Burns' Civil War documentary. (New Respondent) One of the theories about the death of Stonewall Jackson is that his patrol came back to camp covered in dust, and the sentry couldn't tell whether their uniforms were grey or blue.
