South Dakota's first nick name was "The Sunshine State" because it was on the state flag.

At the suggestion of Seth Bullock and State Senator Ernest May, the state flag was designed by Ida M. Anding, legislative librarian, in 1909. The flag displayed a "blazing sun of gold" on one side with the South Dakota State Seal on the other. The words, "The Sunshine State" were located below the sun.

The words, "The Sunshine State" were considered the state nickname until "The Mount Rushmore State" was officially adopted as the state nickname in 1980. However, the words were not changed on the SD flag until 1992, when the SD State Legislature changed the law regarding the state flag.
