Joseph lived a saintly life and, upon the death of Our Lord, the early church declared him as a true saint in heaven. At the time there was no formal canonization process yet in place. That did not come about for over 1000 years. However, the church has continued for over 2000 years to call him a saint. He is commemorated on two feast days - March 18 and May 1.
