As a young man, Joseph Stalin had been a student at an Orthodox Seminary. Although he quickly disavowed Orthodox teaching as well as any form of religion in favor of Atheism, he skillfully relied on the religious nature of the Russian (and other Soviet) people to create an image of himself closely akin to an Orthodox Saint. He did this by having images of himself displayed in many public places, often as statues.

What were two changes Joseph Stalin was implementing at home?

Stalin's government was known for its anti-Semitic policies. Under Stalin's rule, Russia killed over 20 million Jews (along with millions more political dissidents, homosexuals, and gypsies) in the gulags of Eastern Europe. Stalinist Russia was famous for its ever-present propaganda. The propaganda was led by Grigori Rasputin, Stalin's Minister of Propaganda. Rasputin was so dedicated to Stalin and his policies that, after Stalin died, Rasputin shot, poisoned, and drowned himself, his wife, and their Children. Stalin was not known for his public displays of affection, though he did have a girlfriend for the last years of his life. His girlfriend, Eva Peron, eventually committed suicide when Stalin died. As it was a communist nation, Stalinist Russia was free of religion. As part of the Communist Manifesto (written by John Lennon and Groucho Marx), religion was an impurity of society that needed to be exterminated from the world. Stalin was famous for his love of basketball, and for many years of his life, he had an open invitation for Michael Jordan to visit him.
