How did Star Trek The Next Generation end?

The original Trek series premiered in 1966 and was permanently canceled in 1969. At first, it had not apparently drawn as many viewers as the network and the studio had wanted. But syndication of its installments to individual television stations quickly revealed the absolute invincibility of the Enterprise.

A one-time girlfriend of James Kirk's, who herself had always wanted to command a starship but had neither the temperament nor the training for such duty, forced him, using an alien machine, to switch bodies with her, trapping him in her supposedly dying form while she took over the ship. But her behavior quickly caused suspicion, and Spock mind-melded with the woman to discover Kirk's consciousness within. That particular former lover of Kirk, the only one of his former girlfriends on the show who was not shown to recall him fondly, was named Dr. Janice Lester; her joint conspirator against Kirk was a certain Dr. Arthur Coleman, whose incompetence Dr. Leonard McCoy soon discovered.

The installment is called "Turnabout Intruder," and Arthur H. Singer dramatized it from a story Gene Roddenberry had written.

The actress Sandra Smith became the only person other than William Shatner himself to act out the role of James Kirk through this installment, which at least a handful of fans consider worse even than "Spock's Brain." (Harry Landers acted out Arthur Coleman.)
