Stuart Diver was the skiing instructor trapped when the Alpine Way above the ski resort town of Thredbo collapsed, causing a landslide that led one ski resort to crush another. Diver was trapped for three days between two concrete slabs, under mud, rubble and melting snow. Heavy rain had caused the collapse of the road above, so the area where Diver was trapped was very unstable.
Rescue workers had to be careful not to cause the precarious pile of rubble to collapse further. 1350 volunteers and specialists in rescue operations worked in shifts to clear the rubble and find survivors. A 52 year old paramedic, Michael Featherstone, stayed beside Diver while the area around them was stabilised. Because Diver had been buried for 66 hours, he was suffering severe hypothermia and poor circulation, while internal injuries had caused his body to release toxins into his bloodstream. This meant workers had to slowly and delicately move Diver from a position of lying down to one where he was in a vertical position, working carefully to ensure that sudden movement did not cause toxic shock. The entire procedure was slow and tedious, but ultimately successful.

Hence the diver must spin faster when moment of inertia become smaller to conserve angular momentum. In this way the diver can make more somersaults before entering the water. Related To Chapter CIRCULAR MOTION
When a diver surfaces too quickly he gets 'the bends'.As the diver goes down, the pressure causes nitrogen to dissolve in the blood. That's harmless. On the way up the diver must allow time for the nitrogen to come out of the blood slowly. If the diver comes up faster than the recommended timing, the nitrogen gas will form bubbles and block small blood vessels, causing 'the bends' a painful and life threatening condition that is cured by putting the patient in a pressure chamber and bringing the pressure down very, very slowly.
