It is through the settlement claims of the Dutch that Suriname became a country.

Specifically, a country is a geographical region that is organized into a political unit whose culture and economy have something in common or share a common commitment. In the case of Suriname, the Dutch laid claim to an area whose geography began with a coastal zone in the north, flowed into coastal plains, and sandwiched hills, mountains and rain forests between savanna grasslands in the north and south. Additionally, that area was settled albeit in pockets by related populations indigenous to Caribbean islands. The different tribes were committed in their own different tribal ways to living off Suriname's vast land and water resources through farming, fishing and hunting. The Dutch therefore were faced with a geographic unity from which tribal cultures and economies formed separate but similar expressions and through which the Netherlands forged a country from colony to autonomous dependency to independent sovereign state.
