Taupo comes from 'Taupo nui a Tia' which means, 'the great cloak of Tia'. Tia, of Te Arawa iwi, was an early explorer of the central North Island and when he reached Lake Taupo, it reminded him of his cloak but on a grand scale (in some versions it is some cliffs that he likened to his cloak).
