Thaddeus Lowe (1832-1913) spent three years as the Chief Aeronaut (no such thing as astronauts...) in the Civil War's Union Air Balloon Corps. The Union Air Balloon Corps specialized in reconnaissance from hot air balloons during wars to spy on enemy battle plans. He was able to reach heights of about one thousand feet with his balloons.
Thaddeus Lowe was the inventor of the hot air balloon. Abraham Lincoln and Thaddeus Lowe used this technology to survey battlefields and spy when they could.
