Initially due to loans from the IMF. Unlike many countries in similar positions though, Thailand worked hard at paying off those debts (and did so 6 years or so ago). Thailand has a stable economy, very good GDP (with strong exports) and a good tourist market. Interna;l problems, including a military coo and ousted prime minister during this time, it has managed to stay over all, stable. It has therefore remained a good investment with the SET and Baht rates high. It did not suffer from the collapse of the west's financial sectors in the way many did either and has generally weathered that storm too. There is much speculation internally that the Baht is being held aftificially high by BOT (Bank of Thailand), but in truth the balance sheet seems to support the high rate (it is really the dropping of other currencies such as the US Dollar/UK Pound and EU's Euro - rather than the rise in Baht)
