Roosevelt, especially later in his political career, became a champion of conservation. He often spoke about the need for conserving Natural Resources, but what he did is much more impressive. By utilizing the American Antiquities Act of 1906, Roosevelt had the ability to declare federal lands wherever he chose - a privilege still enjoyed by presidents to this day.

He was the first president to pursue conservation issues seriously. Among his achievements, he set aside 230 million acres of land for protection of one type or another, including 150 million acres of forest reserves, 5 national parks, 18 national monuments, and 51 federal bird sanctuaries. He also hosted the conservation conferences to promote conservation goals among the states.

TR was an avid hunter and sportsman, so he had a personal interest in managing wildlife responsibly to protect his own pastime and the values attached to it. He was very fond of the outdoors; he was a talented taxidermist as a child and even wrote a book about birds. It is known that his experience as a cattle rancher in the Dakota Territory between 1883 and 1887 was influential in his conservation ethic. In that time, he witnessed the destruction caused as unchecked capitalists put too many cattle on the land and degraded it, and witnessed the collapse of bison which he originally had gone to Dakota to hunt. These personal experiences plus a growing desire to protect natural places at the turn of the century afforded TR the political capital needed to get the American Antiquities Act of 1906 signed into law, allowing the President of the US to set aside National Monuments at his discretion.
