How did Vincent van Gogh prepare to become an artist?

He took lessons from Anton Mauve, a painter he knew. Vincent registered as a student at the Antwerp Academy of Arts (but seldom attended), he studied old masters at museums, and he took lots of advice from his colleagues in Paris.
On the whole he was self-taught.
