Gilbert helped by developing a method for determining the sequence of nucleotides in the molecules of DNA and RNA.
His work added a lot about how DNA, as a carrier of the genetic traits, directs the chemical machinery of the cell. He received the Nobel Prize in 1980.
Walter Gilbert and Frederick Sanger independently develop methods to determine the exact sequence of DNA. Although the techniques used were different, they all came up with the same conclusion. However, most of today's DNA sequencers are of the ones developed by Sanger.
