During war: He had some sort of infection in his foot, so he went to the surgeon at the camp who proceeded to cut the bottom of his foot to let out pus that had gathered, causing infection.

After war: He was hit by a taxi, then was in a wheelchair for about a year. Fortunately, he recovered and can now walk fine.
