King William III, joined with Mary II at the end of the 17th century as protestant monarchs in Britain. They replaced the deposed James II who was Catholic. Also known as Willem van Oranje, he led the Dutch to independence and religious freedom from Hapsburg Spain. Considered The George Washington of The Netherlands.
The "original" William of Orange (nicknamed William the Silent) is considered the founding father of Dutch independence and the leader of its revolt against the king of Spain. Another famous William of Orange was William III, known for the 'Glorious Revolution' that made him king of England and for the several wars he fought with Louis XIV as champion of the Protestant cause. William III of Orange is also known as "king Billy" in Northern Ireland and revered there for beating the Catholic forces of king James. The Protestant Orangists active to this day in Ulster take their name from him.
It originally referred to the Principality of Orange in the Rhone valley in southern France.
