William the Congueror was the Very Influential Duke of Normandy in the 11th Century. When He invaded England in 1066, he simply used his power that he had developed throughout France to assemble an army to fight the English. It's important to remember that he didn't need to fight the entire English Army, instead a small percentage of it. Northern England contained most of the soldiers at that point in time, so the only real threat he had to deal with was the Army of Wessex, which, although being well armed and well trained, was not nearly enough of a force to withstand the Army The Duke of Normandy William was able to bring.

King William I of England, at the time William II of Normandy claimed that King Edward the Confessor had appointed him as his successor as king of England. When King Edward was dying he proclaimed Harold Godwinson as king instead. William invaded England to claim the crown and defeated King Harold at the Battle of Hastings. He became king through right of conquest.

He was successful because he replaced a lot of the English nobility with his own Norman and French friends and relatives after taking control, most of whom built wooden forts on their land, later replaced with stone castles.

He was also very ruthless in putting down any rebellions.
