Another words, battleships were supposed to shoot the biggest shells the furthest; and destroy enemy warships. Which normally equated to about 20 miles and several hundred rounds (shells). Carriers COULD "deliver" bombs (shells) the furthest & and accurately (over a hundred miles, with "smart weapon" accuracy); and not expend nearly as much ordnance to get the job done.
