Allosaurus probably hunted large, herbivorous dinosaurs such as Camptosaurus, Dryosaurus, and Stegosaurus. If they hunted in packs on occasion, they may have even hunted huge sauropods such as Diplodocus, Brachiosaurus, Camarasaurus, and Apatosaurus.

Allosaurus probably started by stalking its prey before it would spring into action and pursue it. Allosaurus's top speed has been estimated at 19 to 34 miles per hour.

Allosaurus didn't have a very strong bite force; in fact, it was only about 2,148 N, and thus it was weaker than that of lions and crocodiles. Robert T. Bakker found adaptations in Allosaurus that were similar to those of saber toothed cats. It had very strong neck muscles, relatively weak jaw muscles, and could open its mouth extremely wide. Bakker suggests that Allosaurus could have killed large prey such as sauropods by opening its mouth wide and repeatedly slashing the prey with its upper teeth, causing it to eventually bleed to death. With smaller prey, such as Camptosaurus, Allosaurus could have grasped it with its arms and then bitten its throat, causing it to suffocate or bleed to death.
