If you were investigated and found to have any non white ancestor, you would be classified as a ranking in "Coloureds". - Many people went through life thinking they were white (or not even thinking about it) and wake up one day to find they were "coloured" or even black and required to have a 'pass book', possibly lose their job, or even have to move to a totally different area.
