Due to the difficulty of persuading men to go on what seemed to them to be a dangerous and a likely fruitless journey, Christopher Columbus had a difficult time persuading people to join his voyage. Thus the men that would volunteer to go were men that had a reason to leave, mainly criminals. So when he landed his men, who were on the verge of mutiny, proceeded to rape pillage and destroy the Natives, quite literally killing and torturing thousands. Also the plagues brought by the Europeans caused further pandemonium. These Europeans, who lived in tight packed cities compared to the Naives, were disease resistant. To add insult to injury the Europeans continued their land grab, which was eventually joined by France and Britain. This struggle over the new world lasted many hundreds of years. The major happening being the formation of the British colonies, their war that pushed France out of America (the French and Indian war) and their latter separation into what is know known as the United States of America with the Revolutionary war. After the war there were problems in America due to the lack of any strong central government. The Current constitution was established and the country stabilized. People continued pressing west into the only remaining naïve territory. Due to the American expansion, so little room was left that the naives were left no p lace to live at all and the government made them relocate onto reservations that still exist today. So in a way Christopher Columbus brought about a kind of apocalypse among the natives, the undoing of and entire culture.

Thus the reason of the controversy over Columbus day.
