Vasco did not get to close to the coast of Africa, instead his crew made a huge semicircular sweep through the Atlantic Ocean. He made an unusual manevar to reach currents that would help him around the Cape of Good Hope safely. He had help from an Arab pilot who knew the Indian ocean well. With the pilots help, de Gama sailed on to India. He reached the port of Calicut in May 1498 completing their journey to Asia.
