Some monks from the area were not affected by cholera. But then, they did not used the water for drinking. But instead they used to consume beer to quench the thirst. The theory was not accepted immediately. But then, you can not hide the truth for long. Just like that, you can not hide the sun with your hands.

To stop the cholera epidemic, you need to attack the cholera on two fronts. One is to stop the spread of cholera and second is to treat the patients of cholera. Chlorination of water is the best method to make the water safe for drinking. For chlorination to be effective, the water need to be free from the organic material. You go for super-chlorination in cholera epidemic. Food should be freshly cooked to eat. Second in treatment of the cholera patients. You need to seek cooperation from all the sections of the community. Quality of leadership makes all the difference.
