One change was that more women (mostly from the middle and upper classes) were attending college, including a growing number of black women. (It should be noted that most of the women who attended college were studying stereotypically female subjects, such as preparing to be teachers or secretaries, but at least they were getting advanced education. And a small but growing number of women were seeking out non-traditional fields, like studying law or public relations.) More men, mostly from middle and upper class backgrounds, were also attending college; and in a few cities, there were now two-year schools called Junior Colleges which taught specific vocational skills.

And at the high school level, there was an ongoing effort to increase literacy: in previous decades, people from rural parts of the country often did not even get to junior high school (today called middle school), but now, more young people were encouraged to attend school, and a growing number were getting their high school diplomas. Radio was helpful in this regard: a number of cities began broadcasting educational programs specifically designed for use in the schools, and these programs made history or science or literature more interesting for students.

The high school attendance rate increased, new subjects like science and vocational training were emphasized, and the role of teachers evolved to focus more on professional training. Additionally, there was a growing emphasis on standardization and uniformity in educational practices.
