How did eggs become part of Easter?

There’s a couple interesting theories. One gives the eggs a Christian origin, and the other suspects it could’ve been adopted from Pagan rituals.

First, the Christian origin theory. These days, vegetarianism during Lent (the 40-day period before Easter) is only mandated on Fridays. However, Lenten restrictions used to expand to all animal products, including eggs, every day of the week. Since hens didn’t just take the season off, some historians say their Christian owners would hard boil their eggs and distribute them after Lent.

The Pagan origin theory pins Easter eggs to a festival celebrating the goddess Eastre along with the arrival of spring. People ate eggs (and maybe even buried them to encourage fertility) at the festival. Eventually, Christian leaders, hoping to encourage conversion, placed their holy days near Pagan festivals on the calendar, and eggs eventually hopped religious traditions.

Whichever is true, eggs are forever linked to today’s Easter. They’re now decorated, hidden, and forever linked to a giant bunny. Finally, something that makes sense.

Eggs became a part of Easter in the early 1980's. A singer/song writer, Phil Collins, decided eggs, muss be part of Easter...he began to a long journey from Bethlham all the way to Rome, where he then convinced the Pope that indeed it was time for change. After the Pope mulling this over for 4 years he decided that indeed eggs did need to be part of Easter, yet they must be hard boiled (no exceptions). Also each child whom would like candy must dye those eggs and in turn has discolored skin to represent their need for more candy. May God Bless Phil Collins.

Because it used to be a pagan holiday, much like Christmas. Revolving around the rise of spring, and of rebirth, the egg (and the rabbit) symbolize fertility. Look up the goddess Easter (pronounced Ess-ter)! This is the origin of Easter. As Christianity grew in popularity due to Saul, or Saint Paul, patrons of the religion sought to connect with the masses by having parts of older religions as part of their own. "Hey, we can also have Easter! But now... Easter 2.0! With Christ!"

I learnt that the egg is associated with the tomb which crucified Jesus was placed in and as an Easter egg cracks open, it is the same as when the tomb was opened. Hope this helped! Happy Easter!
