Generally speaking, ethnic groups that were targets of racism were opposed to it and ethnic groups that were acting in racist ways against other groups felt their bigotry to be reasonable and rational.

What is the difference between racial groups and ethnic groups?

an ethnic group is a common origin and share their language and a history. This is only answer for ethnic groups.srry *-( racism is based on your physical traits. so what you look like, and ethnicity is based on what you identify yourself as. so simplisticly, racial groups are what other people catagorise you in (based on your physical demenor and look, e.g - 'black' 'white' 'brown' 'yellow' 'red' etc...) and your ethnic group is who you identify being, like you might share commonalities with certain ethnic groups for example be very cultural or religious and identify being a 'pacific islander' just because you were not born in the pacific islands or have pacific island parents or any such blood in you, if you feel you identify strongly with that group (for example - bing taught or brought up in a pacific household or around other pacific island families, children, churches etc.)you can identify yourself in that ethnic group. so therefore, its like saying - your race is fixed, remains unchangable - but, your ethnic group is how you relate to yourself. Extra info...another analogy is with sex and gender; sex is what you are. IT IS A FACT! you are either male or female. but gender refers to how you identify yourself.

What can you do to end racism?

Ignore ignorant people because fighting or arguing is useless. Racists WANT your attention, they want you to feel degrading, they want you to be angry. Just like bullies...people should not face racism alone, they should be in groups instead of being alone because that is when they are the most targeted. racism is so obsolete and outdated. pshh ignore them.

Why has it been hard for many African nations to become unified?

The large number and various sizes of ethnic groups has made it difficult for some African countries to develop into unified, modern nations. In some African countries, national boundaries cut across traditional ethnic homelands. As a result, people may feel closer ties to neighbors in another country than to other ethnic groups within their own country. Ethnic and religious differences have led to civil wars in several countries.

Why did ethnic groups feel more compelled to push for independence from European countries in the 1830s?

At the Congress of Vienna the major European powers met to restructure Europe after the conquests of Napoleon. This was done in ways that benefitted the ruling powers and the upper classes but it did not necessarily take into consideration ethnic differences. Some groups were forced to be part of a country that did not share their heritage, language, or religion.

Why battalions were divided by ethnicity?

The regimental system of Highland Scots, and Canadian Irish or so on was meant to use the pride of ethnic groups to encourage them in battle. Canadians as a whole wanted to prove themselves and individual towns, neighbourhoods and ethnic groups were largely segregated by unit and would in some ways compete for glory and respect, especially minorities that might otherwise feel alienated.
