The plebeians were not unhappy about all of Rome's wars and her expansion. They were proud of Rome's military success and the spoils of war (part of which were distributed to the soldiers) were an incentive to fight. The wars they were unhappy about were those in Spain. This is because these wars were endless and the Romans suffered tens of thousands of casualties. The plebeians farmers who formed the backbone of the Roman army did not want to go to a distant land and be exposed to a high risk of dying.
