The slaves offered to cook for the confederate soldiers and they offered medical attention to wounded soldiers of the Confederate Army. And if I'm not mistaken, there were slaves that volunteered to fight with our confederate soldiers against the Union Army. I haven't read up on the history of the Civil War in a long time but there are a few things that I do remember reading about. So no matter what blacks or anyone else has to say about our confederate history and heritage, the slaves were not obligated to do anything during this war but offered to help our troops out.
The black codes were regulation created for the freedmen (slaves that were set free after the Civil War). They restricted their economic rights, they were not allowed to vote, they weren't allowed to hold office or serve on a jury nor could they receive a public education.
Blanche K. Bruce served as a U.S. Senator from Mississippi from 1875 to 1881, becoming the first African American to serve a full term in the Senate. During his tenure, he advocated for civil rights, education, and economic opportunities for African Americans, working to improve the lives of freedmen in the post-Civil War South. Bruce also focused on issues such as land grants for education and the establishment of public schools. His efforts were significant in the context of Reconstruction, as he sought to represent the interests of his constituents amidst widespread racial discrimination.

The Union allowed blacks to serve in the army. The Confederates did not allow slaves to fight in combat so they only used blacks for non-combat issues such as servants.
