A model is never technically disproven or proven. The ptolemaic model is no longer accepted because it does not adequately explain observations. The heliocentric model was accepted gradually because it was a better explanation for observed phenomena. However, people continued to believe the ptolemaic model long after it was irrational to do so.
One observation definitely disproved the Ptolemaic model, although it didn't prove that Copernicus was right (as Tycho Brahe pointed out). This was the observation that Venus has phases, much like our Moon does.
To the naked eye, Venus always appears as a bright dot in the sky. With a telescope, however, it is fairly easy to see the phases of Venus. Just as the Moon has phases, Venus too has phases based on the planet's position relative to us and the Sun.
There was no way for the Ptolemaic model (Earth-centered solar system) to account for these phases. They can only occur as Galileo saw them if Venus is circling the Sun, not the Earth.
Copernicus disproved the Ptolemaic Theory of the Universe.
Refracting telescopes :}
Becuase every one thought that the earth was the center of the universe (religion) and he tried to prove them wrong but they were to powerful with their numbers

Galileo Galilei was born on February 15 1564, and died on 8 January 8, 1642.He made his first telescope in 1609, and discovered the moons around Jupiter in 1610.
probably in his house. he was looking at the stars and figured out that when you hold two kinds of lenses in front of each other it magnifies it Galileos lived all his life in tuscony in Italy.
