Think Mesopotamia between the rivers- water is good for agriculture, and agriculture means permanent settlement is possible . Egypt had this same relationship with the Nile. If the settlement is between mountains, it would be safer from attack or takeover, whereas a settlement in a more accessible area- think Greece- would likely develop I to more of a trade nation
