According to the Indian epic the Ramayana (4th c. BCE), he was born a very powerful lad because his parents were celestial beings. Being a Vanara, a race of semi-divine monkeys, he loved to eat fruit. One day, he leaped towards the sun because he thought it was a piece of fruit. The god Indra struck him in the face with a lighting bolt, knocking him from the sky. This broke his jaw, hence his name Hanuman (Broken Jaw). He was later healed and given several boons from the gods out of fear and respect for his father Vayu, god of wind.
