James Hutton invited the rock cycle theory. but the rock cycle is a perfectly natural (ie not man-made) phenomenon, therefore nobody invented the cycle its self.
One scientist who attempted to explain how rock layers form and change over time was James Hutton.
the endpoint of a rock cycle is the metamorphic rock
it is a true cycle because it the rock cycle
A rock cycle is a model that shows the cycle of rocks from the formation to the breakdown and to the reformation. He used a rock cycle for his science project.

Uplift
James Hutton's theory of rock formation is supported by several vertical rock formations around the world.
One scientist who attempted to explain how rock layers form and change over time was James Hutton.
James Hutton was a geologist and naturalist who was against the theory of evolution. He proposed that the process of uplift replenishes the rock on the Earth's surface.
James Hutton 1 Jan 1785 Used Steno's Law of Superposition. It compares rock layers to rocks above and below the rock. Evidence: Hutton found granite penetrating metaphoric schists, in a way which indicated that the granite had been molten at the time. This showed to him that granite formed from cooling of molten rock, not precipitation out of water as others at the time believed, and that the granite must be younger than the schists.
James Hutton was considered foolish because he claimed the earth had been built up and eroded away several times in what was commonly considered only 6000 years. Alfred Wegener was thought to be a fool because he claimed the continents were once joined together. People thought: How could solid rock move across the oceans?
