There was a river named Ponni. One day, Sage Agastya crossed the region of Ponni, then river goddess(Ponni) appeared in front of the sage and had some egoistic chat. Pissed off Agastya, put Ponni in his kamandalam (a kinda bowl which sages carry containing water). Then that region became dry and people prayed to god to release the river. Lord Ganapati appeard as crow and pushed the kamandalam making the river flow again. After some chat between Ganapati and sage, issue was resolved and Ponni was renamed to Kaveri (Ka stands for crow and veri means wide), since the river flows widely and was released by crow, its named Kaveri. Ponni later apologized to the sage and took the name Kaveri.
