Stalin made various contributions to the improvement of economic and social stability throughout Russia from 1929-1941. However, living conditions were still tough and many homes remained without a sewage system, electricity or even running water. Stalin set targets to improve output throughout Russia in the coal, iron, oil, steel and electricity industries. The continuing takeover of the Marxist theories adopted by the Bolshevik party allowed Stalin to practice collectivization of industries, forcing workers to work for up to 12 hours a day for minimal pay. Despite this, Russia's industrial output was so vastly improved many consider these sacrifices a necessary cause to ensure Russia caught up with the revolutionary powers of the new world.
