Lupus means wolf. Some say that the characteristic lupus facial rash (also called a malar or butterfly rash) looks like a person has been bit in the face by a wolf. Others say that that same rash resembles the pattern of color on a wolf's face. I have read both explanations.
"Lupus" is the Latin word for "wolf". A physician named Rogerius in the thirteenth century described the classic malar rash as what look liked a wolf's bite therefore he named the disease lupus.
The Latin word "lupus" means "wolf." "Lupercalia" is the ancient Roman festival to the wolf that suckled Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome. "Lupa" is also Latin slang for "whore" or "prostitute" (in case you ever wanted to know, "lupae filius" means "son of a bitch" in Latin)
...because it creeps up on you like a wolf ?
Lupus comes from Latin (not Italian) and means wolf. Although there is a medical condition called lupus (and lupus erythmatosus) that is called lupus in Italian (and other languages, too).
Cutaneous lupus which is often called discoid lupus.
Lupus
There are two types of lupus:Discoid lupus - often called skin lupus, this affects only the skin.Systemic Lupus Erythematosus - antibodies attack the connective tissue, organs etc throughout the body.
Canis lupus.
There are four types of lupus. Cutaneous lupus, often called discoid, is lupus that affects the skin. Systemic lupus erythematosus affects the the body internally, damaging organs and joints. It is possible to have both. Drug induced lupus is caused by certain medications and subsides when the offending medication is withdrawn. Neonatal lupus occurs in newborn babies.
Discoid lupus may come and go in periods of increased disease activity called a flare.
Lupus is a chronic, inflammatory, autoimmune disease in which the cells of the immune system which are supposed to protect against pathogens (viruses, bacteria, fungi, and toxins) mistakenly target the health self. There is no cure for lupus. Lupus is managed by suppressing the immune system with a variety of medications. Most cases of lupus are mild to moderate, but it can also be life threatening. Lupus is also a remitting/flaring disease characterized by periods of calm called remission and periods of activity called flares.
Bishop's death was a result of complications encountered from a disease he had called Lupus. His immune system went haywire and resulted sadly in his demise.

Yes and if you put those words into the search box on Google Images, you can see pictures.
Lupus is an autoimmune disease. The patient's immune system cannot differentiate between pathogens and healthy parts of the self. There are four types of lupus: discoid or cutaneous, systemic lupus erythematosus, neonatal lupus, and drug induced lupus. The cause of lupus is not fully understood. There is no cure. Lupus affects 5 million people worldwide.
