Auschwitz II (Birkenau) was the largest Nazi killing centre. Most new arrivals were gassed as soon as practical after arrival. Some were shot, and some were selected for slave labour. Birkenau also housed the Women's Camp. The majority of prisoners held at Auschwitz were killed in the various gas chambers though many died from starvation, forced labor, disease, shooting squads, and heinous medical experiments.
