well in the beginning the dead were laid to rest in the sand, which was very hot and dry and preserved the bodies very well. Eventually someone found one of these bodies and started using sand to preserve all dead, then someone figured out that you could use natron to do the same thing without taking a peice of the saharah with you and it all went from there.
