Napoleon Bonaparte was a young French general who enjoyed a very high popularity among the French public, due to his military victories. He had a large military body at hand, obeying him unconditionnally. His brother Joseph was a very influential politician, at the highest level of the then French executive body, the Directoire. The society at large didn't want a return to monarchy, which would put in jeopardy all the social progress that had been achieved throughout the revolution; but the French at the time had enough with the revolutionary bloodshed and they wanted to end the uncertainties of the revolutionary era. The bourgeoisie wanted a return to order, the clergy a return to moral order, and they felt Napoleon was the right man to achieve that.

Except some die-hard revolutionaries, and some equally isolated monarchists, there was very little opposition to Napoleon's coup. That coup (Nov. 9, 1799) ended the historical period of the French revolution.
